Midnight 's Daughter

Yesterday evening when the news hit our TV channels we were absolutely shocked and stunned to hear about the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
This is what terrorism has done to a brave and gutsy daughter of Pakistan. Her opponents have a lot to say about her but I greatly admire her courage and stand against terrorism and despotism.A woman who became Prime Minister twice at a very young age in a fundamentalist male dominated society.
She was liberal and pro-democracy and against terrorism. She paid a heavy price for it.
We are grieving for her, her family and Pakistan which is in turmoil.Saw the live coverage of her funeral this evening. She was laid to rest beside her father who was hanged by a military dictator and her two brothers who were killed. Salman Rushdie has based his novel Shame on the life of her father.

Sonia arrived in the evening with Abner. She brought us gifts and so many edible goodies that we have not stopped eating.Think I've gained 5 pounds.Abner (6 years)is sharing all his snacks with me and Sheeba is very excited as she is getting some.

I was shocked and saddened by this news, as well. I wish I could ay it was a big surprise; but frankly, she was taking on a very dangerous task by returning to Pakistan at all. I don't know if she would have been a perfect leader for Pakistan. To me, her candidacy was complicated by a whif of oligarchy and dynasty that bothered me a little. HOWEVER, she would have been a democratically elected leader and would have began to move the country once again in that direction. It would have been a good start. And just on a personal level, I admired her for her strength and courage. I struggle to make sense of Islamic fundamentalism, and it makes me feel tired and blue to see the things they are willing to do to their more moderate brothers and sisters.

Perhaps now martyred she may have a greater effect on the thoughts of those who would take up the courage to pursue freedom.
This is a real sign of the times.
I hope you enjoy your visit. A 6 yr old in the house makes for a busy next few days.

We were shocked and saddened to learn of this woman's death. May God in His mercy, reveal the Truth of Himself to those who planned this hideous crime.

I was saddened when I saw the news of her death. She returned knowing what her fate would more then likely be. Unfortunately she was correct.
Enjoy your gifts and not stop eating - I too have eaten way to much this season!

If I may borrow the phrase – she is either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid. Who would step into a snake pit unless you are...!

My heat goes out for her family. Bloodthirsty zealots have no respect for life. It’s all about their ‘twisted view’ of this world and their version of religion. It makes me cringe when I hear the Pak officials trying to put a spin on the cause of her death. Poor woman is dead - Let her rest in peace.

Even though we knew this would happen it is still shocking and very sad. Sad for her family and for her country and for the agenda of change that she so desired to bring to the political playing field in Pakistan. I wonder if any of us are as committed to our ideals as she was??
