The $2500 Tata Nano, Unveiled in India
Indian automaker Tata Motors has finally unveiled the Tata Nano -- its already legendary $2,500 (1-lakh)car. As expected, the car that Tata claims will change the face of not only the Indian car market, but the global auto industry will be a four door, five seat hatch, powered by a 30 HP Bosch 624 cc four stroke engine mounted out back and mated to a CVT. That makes the Nano the first time a 2-cylinder gasoline engine will be used in a car with a single balancer shaft. The Nano's also expected to get 54 US miles per gallon or 25 km per liter of petrol.

Mr. Ratan N. Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group and Tata Motors, today unveiled the Tata 'NANO', the People's Car from Tata Motors that India and the world have been looking forward to. A development, which signifies a first for the global automobile industry, the People's Car brings the comfort and safety of a car within the reach of thousands of families. The People's Car will be launched in India later in 2008.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, Mr. Ratan N. Tata said, "I observed families riding on two-wheelers - the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. Tata Motors' engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal. Today, we indeed have a People's Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions. We are happy to present the People's Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility."

Well, we 'll have to see how it does on the road. But its pretty affordable for the common man. But we mave to improve our roads for the influx of cars.
$2500 is pretty cheap. The Swift and Innova are 5 to 8 times that one. Why do I like expensive stuff.?

The last 2 days have been pretty warm, today was cold with a chilly wind.
Now Sheeba is pestering me to give her extra dinner and after that I 'll watch the thriller"When a Stranger Calls" on HBO

I'm glad to hear that the court appearance went well, Amrita!

Thanks for the info on the Nano. I hadn't hear of it, but of course keeping up on cars is probably not one of my talents!! I'm impressed with the company's approach and attitude, though, and its desire to make this actually affordable rather than just a little bit cheaper than the other guys. I hope it performs well for those who buy it.

i would like one of those little cars! i thought it was very smart of the manufacturer to take away all frills, and make it so affordable! ... we have little cars similar to that one, but they have frills and go for $14,500 -

it does look cool there now - 57F ... we do have you beat though, it is 0F here ... brrrrrrrrrr

Dear Amrita,
congats with the newly innovated Nano.
Even our local Norwegian newspaper wrote about it yesterday.
It sounds fair and reasonable, hope it brings a lot of people more comfort and joy.

Hi Amrita,
A very good post of high interest to me as well. I think what you said finally sums it up - we will have to wait and see and really I would like to wait for the JD POwers quality test report in a year to actually see how it has performed. To the Indian consumer, fuel efficiency is paramount. Their claim of 20km/ltr is in test conditions but on road we will have to see. Besides, if you know, the Tata's have already shyed away from immediate roll out from their Singur plant of further cars and hence we will have to see if their production is so delayed that it fails to catch the JDP report for 2008! I am not being pessimistic, but I think finally it will serve the 18-22 age group, college going as in the case of the segment that is beyond those years, they would perhaps prefer to pay a little more and go for Maruti 800, tried and tested as it is. And in the meantime, Bombay has already banned the entry of the TataNano, on grounds of lack of space - *sigh*

Hi Amrita,
Does your family presently own any type of car? We too heard about the Nano being launched on the news. (I hate to say it but we have four cars. Three are used daily ... and one is an old classic 1976 Jeep we use to drive around the lake in the summer time. Hubby drives a Ford, I drive a Toyota Tacoma pick up truck and my teenage daughter drives my older Dodge mini van.

I read about the Nano in the newespaper. Cost; 1750 euro. But I think it's not allowed on the Dutch road.

Hello Amrita, I saw this car on the news. I think it is really neat and would be a blessing to own one with such high gas prices.

Blessings,Shelley

It looks like a nice car. Are you driving a car?

A Nano?! Heard about it just the other day. Look out now, at that price, everyone will have one! Just what you need on those super highways in India...a Nano smoke-filled epidemic, huh? Yikes, they are everywhere!

Hi Amrita,
I got your name from Pia Olano's blog. I made a peep at your blog and liked what I saw. I will be linking you with my blog and I hope you do the same with mine. Tata's car is really a great innovation, one that will surely revolutionize the auto industry. With its price of $ 2,500. it becomes affordable to almost everybody. The regular price of a Japanese car here in the Philippines is around $ 15,000. Just think how many people will be able to afford a new car if it will cost them that little. The only problem will be the deterioration of traffic problem in main thoroughfares. Thanks for the wonderful post. God bless and have a wonderful and peaceful day always.

Hi Friends thanks for your comments.
Hello Jeanette, we hope it does well on our roads, as Papa said too. I own an old Maruti 800.
Yes Saija, its cold your way. Today the temps lower and a cold wind is blowing. Our buildings are not cold proof, that 's why we feel uncomfortable.

Dear Mrs Mac, We have an old Maruti Suzulki 800. i don 't drive, have to get a driver. We can 't afford a regular driver, but we get people to ferry us, specially when Mom wants to go out.

Hi Felisol, Nice to hear Nano is making international news, its quite an achievment. The booking will start in July/Aug and it will in the market in Sept/Oct

Hi Julia, Lets see when the Nano will actually hits the roads. There are lots of questions around.I know the kids are now wanting to get rid of their 2 wheelers and jump onto the Nano bandwagon. It will create traffic problems.Didn 't know Mumbai has banned it.

Hi Dick, seems 1750 euros is not that expensive?

Yes Shelly a small car should consume less fuel. We really need that as our gas prices are soaring.

I don 't drive Gudl, but get help

Yes, I read about that little car and my thought was how on earth would a very LONG person (such as myself) possibley fit into such a creation!! So, it may be a good car for the environment and for people with not too much money but it is discriminatory in that it is ONLY for the short!!!!

Good news about the court appearance....glad to hear it.
I like driving a small car, but my last few cars have been the larger SUV's which have spoiled me for their clear view of the road. My fear of driving a small car is being in an accident - there are so many gigantic trucks and larger SUV's (like mine) - it just seems like there is no protection at all in one of those....kind of like riding on a bicycle without a helmet! But ~ I like the price and gas mileage!

Amrita said...

Yes Par the milage seems good.

Hi Mel, thanks for visiting my blog

You are right Rebecca , tall people would have a problem. My BIL finds it hard to drive his Maruti and my nephew too.In Canada they drive bigger SUVs, don 't know their names.

Hi
Just popped in from Kosta's site.
I found your post on the Nanao interesting - it is certainly a peoples car and will make travel much safer.
My son-in-law had an Indian motor cycle, which had 4 foot rests - this will be a better proposition
