Blackdog Millionaire

If the recession has you running for cover
and the planets spell doom - Indian astrologers have the perfect remedy for you - a black dog.
This advice has so many takers that pet shops
have a shortage of black pups, in fact stray black pooches are being snapped up off the streets my newspaper tells me.(Good thing)
A black Lab pup which normally sells for Rs 8000 to 10,000 in Delhi
is now fetching 15,000.
A car cleaner in East Delhi says,
*My jyotshi (astrologer) told me I should feed a black dog for luck,
happiness and money on Tuesdays,Saturdays and Sundays".
An astrologer who does not want to be named says,"A dog prays for his master".
Now don 't get me wrong , I am not an adherent of astrology
or any of its branches.
I am a firm believer in the providence of the Lord God and that He holds
my life and future, in fact the whole world in His hands. But I can 't help thinking if it were about 20 years ago, we would
have made a fast buck because we owned black dogs then.
Our black Lab , Jackie.
(above with Namrita and me)
and German Shepherd Lassie - posing with
BIL Prem sitting on Papa 's old Vespa.

Here is Lassie with Namrita
(L-R )
Shalu (Simran 's Mom), my Mother knitted the sweater she is wearing, Anju, Mildred (our friend) Sonia
2nd row - Namrita, Aunt Marjorie with pup Jackie, myself
and Aunt Sybil.

Lassie with Mom and Dad.
Again mom knitted the pull-over Papa is wearing
My white as snow quadruped, Sheeba keeping vigil at the back door.
She takes up that post every morning while I am blogging or doing the laundry and other house work.
Sigh... this business opportunity is 20 years too late.
We could have wedded Lassie and Jackie and minted
a fortune - our Blackdog Millionaire has gone to the dust.

Amen! I'm so glad we don't have to look to the things of this world to find comfort.

But I did love your walk down memory lane! It's amazing how much joy pets can bring to our lives!

BTW, I love your new look. Love the butterflies!

What lovely dogs. Hopefully people here will listen to that as our shelters are full of black labs and I would love to see them all get good homes.

I love the Vespa, my husband used to have one.

I opening my photograph trunk and rummaging through the memories

Hi Julie, I 'm glad if someone is taking care of the black strays.Somehow a black dog commands more respect...they look fearful too.
I miss the Vespa rides with my Dad.

I really enjoyed the photographic tour of your family and family dogs. You are a good looking bunch I must say. And I love the dogs. I am getting ready to send you another two books, but must decide on the second one. To commemorate Obama's election, I am dending you a black history memoir, of a very courageous girl who fought for desegregation. Without all these freedom fighters he would not be there today and Michelle raised in Chicago would not be having tea with the queen! I am unable to get to a store to find a book of quotations yet, so will send another kind of book for now. Gerry

I can't get enough of your family photos and remarks, Amrita. It is all so interesting.

How very curious about the black dogs being in demand! I am glad, as so many need homes. But I'm even gladder that Sheeba is white and won't catch the eye of anyone lacking a "lucky dog." Give her a big hug from me and all my dogs and cats!

Thankyou friends. you all are just too kind.

The photo in the header is taken from the web. Its the border of a fancy Indian sari. I wanted to give my blog an ethnic look.

Lille Meg its easier now to visit your blog.Sometimes it gives trouble.I don 't mind the Norwegian. The pictures do the talking.

Thank you so much Gerry. I love he srories of courage and valor. Right now I am reading Heln Keller 's biography. Its soul stirring. Are you sending me a book on Rosa Parks? I 'd love to read the biography of Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama - specially his growing up years and

Condi Rice.

Hi Dame Penni,

I went over and wished Jonathan a happy birthday. Do pray he recovers from his illness. Such a sweet boy.

Oh yes I wouldn 't exchange my Sheebs with all the black dogs of the world. She is my soul companion. These day she is not eating much. i fed her some peanuts at bed time. She likes those - the little monkey

At least a few dogs will be treated well for the next few months because of this. :-)

I am fascinated by the fact that you had a dog named Lassie. I guess I've never really thought about dogs in other countries with that name...! That was one of my favorite shows as a kid.

I really think people are desperate for some good & hope in these times- thus they are willing to put their faith in Astrologers, who unfortunately will prove to be very wrong.

I certainly enjoy your pictures Amrita!

You made me laugh tonight with this post! Gorgeous dogs! We can't have a dog right now where we live, which is actually okay. We have recently been adopted by a sweet cat, though!

Great photos of your dogs.

I don't believe in astrology either, but I think the one who said that dogs pray for their owners... I suspect he is right.

You have lovely dogs. It was great seeing your family. I remember the Vespa's, I was never allowed to have one much to my annoyance (my parents considered them to be unsafe).

The photographs with your parents, the beautiful dogs, but also the information that you share to us, created one most excellent post! Congratulations!

What a heartwarming post with lots of beautiful pictures and stories that go with each one. I love reading your posts, Amrita, and like you, I'm a dog lover too!

I can feel the connection between us, different cultures, but one God, and one Father over us.
