Houseboats in Kashmir

When I was 8 or 9 years old I went with my parents and elder sister on a holiday to Kashmir. I remember some of it, specially sliding down the glaciers, living in a tent on a riverbank, riding on a boat called shikara (above) and visiting cherry and apple orchards.

Here under the watchful eye of the lofty snow covered mountains you can stay in a houseboat. We couldn' t do that, but its worth an experience.
You can choose a houseboat suited to the amount you can spend.

They have plush interiors, with all the luxury and comfort you desire.

They make lovely honeymoon getaways.

The Indian state of Kashmir is a paradise on Earth and has two of the most important mountain ranges – the Himalayas and the Pir Pangal. These mountain ranges are the source of the major rivers that flow down into the valleys. Srinagar is one of the most enchanting places in the state which is famous the Dal Lake which is famous for the houseboats. Along the shores of the Dal Lake lie the lies the parks and gardens of the Mughal Era, now collectively known as the “Mughal Gardens”. Srinagar is also the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and gives a wonderful holiday experience especially during the summers.

The appeal of the houseboats in Kashmir attracts tourists from all over the world to Srinagar. These houseboats provide a unique and matchless experience of staying amidst the cold waters of the Lakes in Kashmir in a cedar paneled elegant bedrooms with all modern facilities and services. These houseboats anchor along parts of the Dal and the Nagin Lakes and River Jhelum. Like hotels, these houseboats vary in luxury depending upon the extent of luxury they provide. The Department of tourism of Kashmir have graded these houseboats into five categories which include Deluxe, A, B, C, and D.

In Kashmir, there are around 1087 house boats which include 349 deluxe, 129 A-Class, 124 B-Class, 134 C-Class and 351 D-Class boats. Like a luxury hotel, a luxury houseboat has good furnishing, carpets, and attached bathrooms with modern bath fittings while a D-Class boat are like budget and economy hotels and provide basic furnishing. The houseboats vary widely in their location with some facing the main road and others facing the gardens and local markets and villages. These houseboats provide personalized service and have “houseboy” to look after the guests. Every standard houseboat has a lounge, dining room, balcony and bedrooms with attached bath and is provided with municipal water connectivity. The costs of hiring a houseboat for a day are inclusive of all meals and free rides from the house boat to the nearest jetty and back. These houseboats are not anchored along any banks of the river and so there are Shikaras available to provide free transportation services to the guests or tourists from the nearest jetty to the houseboat. I knew about Kashmir only from TV or press - about war between India and Pakistan or about interesting culture and religion of people from Kashmir, who believe that they are children of Alexander the Great. But on Your photos I see beautiful nature with big mountains and very nice place to relax.
I like reading blogs. Because I can know something different from news from medias.
God bless You, Amrita.

I love reading about these places in India close to the Himalayas. I have always loved reading mountain climbing stories that describe the terrain. I can imagine the Kashmir which is a fabled place to most westerners. Thanks for making it more of a reality!

I have read that Kashmir is one of the most beautiful places on the earth, also one of the most 'fought-for' between India and Pakistan. It is also featured in a number of movies. Thanks for sharing this, Amrita!

Amrita, I came here to you thanks to Zimbabwe, from which I link to your blog (I know now that the even will be hosted here at times) Kashmir "know" only from television and this a little and also because in the Polish media in general almost no mention of interesting places, unfortunately ... In particular, the interior seems to me to be beautiful:) It's great to have such memories ...
I greet you!

FVC. I hope I did not do too many mistakes - my English is not very fluent:)

Here's the plan, Amrita: We figure out a way to buy one of those and sail it to the U.S. I generously volunteer to live in the boat and keep it safe at all times. lol.

OH WOW, how beautiful they are!

I remember reading about the places you mention from M.M. Kaye's books both fiction & non-fiction of her childhood growing up there. Srinager in particular had a major part of one of her books. (She also had a pronunciation guide in some of her books.) One of her mystery books was set on a Shikara in Kashmir.

Hi Zimb, you 've got your facts right. Hope you are having a good vacation in the Polish mountains.

Dear Gerry, Kashmir indeed is the jewek in India 's crown.

Dear Sita that is why India and Pak and fighting over it since decades. Still there is a lot of unrest there.

Kala, I welcome you to my blog.
English is not my forst language also, but I manage somehow LOL. I will go over to your blog in a minute.Good to meet you.

Hi Holly, I suppose an unfurnished one would cost 5 or 6 thousand dollars. You could fly it over to TX and have the most exotic home down south.
Ans this is no 'castle in the air '

Hi Kathryn,

I have read MM Kaye 's books, she is a great author. I have not read the shikara novel.

Oh yes Madison, on your trip to India you must visit Kashmir, its not too far from Punjab.

Kashmir is indeed a paradise of a place. So many wars between India and Pakistan has been fought for the sole control of this exquisite paradise. It would be most wonderful to have a vacation in Kashmir and live in those elegant houseboats. It would surely be an experience of a lifetime. Thanks for the post. God bless you always.
