India on the Human Development Index

Hindustan  Times  ,  Nov.3, 2011
Despite its high economic growth, India has been ranked lower than its neighbours, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, on multi-dimensional poverty index (MPI) and gender inequality index (GII) by the United Nations Development Programme.

The global Human Development Report released on Wednesday, however, ranks India 134 among 187 countries, higher than Pakistan but lower than Sri Lanka in the human development index (HDI).

Norway is top and Congo bottom of the index that measures healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

I saw this movie with my mom earlier this year, and it was called Dobi Gaat, or something like that.

Anyway, I enjoyed the movie thoroughly, but something was kind of puzzling to me. It seemed like next to sheer destitutuion and poverty you have high rises and rich people.

This movie took place in Mumbai.

I've never been to India before, I want to go one day, but it just kind of strikes me as kind of interesting, that right next to slums and people begging for food, you have the tremendously rich and affluent.

Hi OI, Its surprising that you saw this movie, I haven' t seen it yet. Its a good one I am told. Yes its set in Mumbai.India is a land of contrasts and paradoxes. There are very rich people while millions starve. Unequal distribution of wealth - illeracy, over population, ills of society , caste sysytem and religion, genger inequality all contribute to it.

Do visit India one day.I am sure you will like it

Well, I think I mentioned this before, but since my mom is Indian (born in Fiji) she enjoys these new Indian movies that are coming out. But honestly, thank goodness there were english subtitles at the bottom. I mean I still could have followed the movie, but the subtitles helped.

I didn't know they still had a caste system. I thought they were starting to do away with that.

Gender inequality, I kind of figured that was still around, but I'm hoping that as time goes by, that kind of stuff will be done away with.

Hi OI, yes caste discrimination is illegal, but it is so deeply embedded in our society and phyche that it is virtually impossible to do away with it. Things are much better for the dalits though.

Its nice they have sub titiles in the movies. Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire?

Hey Amrita,

What's a dalit?

Yes, I saw Slumdog Millionaire, and I loved it of course.

Great movie!

Dalit is a name given to the oppressed low caste people.
