Water Chestnuts

These are water chestnuts or singharas in Hindi.Low cal seasonal fruit/vegetable or snack. During religious fasting Hindus dry them and make flour with them. Here they are with the skin on. I boiled them in salt water
These are the peeled ones. You can lightly saute them in oil and sprinkle them with salt and peeper.Or eat them raw too. They are a healthy snack.
I wonder if you can get them in the west.

  1. The only water chestnuts I have ever seen came in a can. We add them to Chinese food, mostly. I bet they are a totally different thing when they are fresh!

  9. Yes, water chestnut taste really good. Chinese used them in cooking pig knuckles. They add a certain tangy taste to the viand. Thanks for the post. God bless you always my friend.

  13. Hi Kathie, thank you for visitng me from Costa Rica.I met you before but lost your website, now I will save it.

Hi everyone it was so good to hear from all of you. If you can get fresh water chestnuts try eating them the North Indian way.I 'm sure you 'll like them. Saute them in butter or olive oil and sprinkle them with a little salt and pepper.Any cheese will also do.You can have them with rice or even mashed potatoes or fries.
