Wanted : Seaweed

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2010) — Seaweed could hold the key to tackling obesity after it was found it reduces fat uptake by more than 75 per cent, new research has shown.
Now the team at Newcastle University are adding seaweed fibre to bread to see if they can develop foods that help you lose weight while you eat them.
A team of scientists led by Dr Iain Brownlee and Prof Jeff Pearson have found that dietary fibre in one of the world's largest commercially-used seaweed could reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the body by around 75 per cent.
The Newcastle University team found that Alginate -- a natural fibre found in sea kelp -- stops the body from absorbing fat better than most anti-obesity treatments currently available over the counter.
Using an artificial gut, they tested the effectiveness of more than 60 different natural fibres by measuring the amount of fat that was digested and absorbed with each treatment.
Presenting their findings at the American Chemical Society Spring meeting in San Francisco, Dr Brownlee said the next step was to recruit volunteers and study whether the effects they have modelled in the lab can be reproduced in real people, and whether such foods are truly acceptable in a normal diet.
"The aim of this study was to put these products to the test and our initial findings are that alginates significantly reduce fat digestion," explains Dr Brownlee.
"This suggests that if we can add the natural fibre to products commonly eaten daily -- such as bread, biscuits and yoghurts -- up to three quarters of the fat contained in that meal could simply pass through the body.
"We have already added the alginate to bread and initial taste tests have been extremely encouraging. Now the next step to to carry out clinical trials to find out how effective they are when eaten as part of a normal diet."
The research is part of a three year project being funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. It addresses the new regulations set out by the European Food Safety Authority that any health claims made on a food label should be substantiated by scientific evidence.
"There are countless claims about miracle cures for weight loss but only a few cases offer any sound scientific evidence to back up these claims," explains Dr Brownlee.
Alginates are already commonly used at a very low level in many foods as thickeners and stabilisers and when added to bread as part of a blind taste test, Dr Brownlee said the alginate bread actually scored higher for texture and richness than a standard white loaf.
"Obesity is an ever-growing problem and many people find it difficult to stick to diet and exercise plans in order to lose weight," explained Dr Brownlee.
"Alginates not only have great potential for weight management -- adding them to food also has the added advantage of boosting overall fibre content."
What is a dietary fibre?
Dietary fibre would be scientifically classified as a group of carbohydrates of plant origin that escape digestion by the human gut.
"Actually, there's still quite a lot of confusion about fibre," says Dr Brownlee. "I think most people would describe it as roughage -- the bit of your food that keeps you regular and is vital for a healthy gut.
"Both of these facts are true but the notion that all fibre is the same and that it simply goes through your system without having an effect is wrong."
Fibre is made up of a wide range of different molecules called polysaccharides and although it is not digested by the human gut, it both directly and indirectly affects a number of bodily processes.
Dr Brownlee adds: "These initial findings suggest alginates could offer a very real solution in the battle against obesity."

But this knowledge will cerainly reduce a big man.

I am not obese but want to shed some pounds and increase my fibre intake. I don 't know if seaweed is available here. Can we buy it in India?

Happy Birthday Billy Graham

When I was 12 years old Dr Akbar Haqq, an associate evengelist with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association came to my city to hold revival meetings. Our family went every night. And on a Sunday afternoon when I heard the preacher expound the death of Christ on Calvary and why I must be born again and make my decision publically , I gave my heart to Jesus. It was very difficult for me to raise my hand and walk up front for prayer as I was very shy and lacked self confidence, but I did it by God 's grace. A missionary lady was my counsellor and I still have the little booklets she gave me about how to live the Christian life.

I used to listen to "The Hour of Decision " for many years . I wrote to them every month and got free books which Cliff Barrows anounced. They also sent me the Decision magazine which I carefully saved.

God bless you Dr Graham and Happy Birthday to you.

_______________________________ Those whose lives have been influenced by the ministry of Reverend Billy Graham are being invited to send a special birthday greeting to the evangelist.

Editor's note: Associated Press is reporting that the evangelist
was hospitalized last Saturday) after suffering a fall late Friday
at his home in North Carolina. X-rays showed no broken bones,
and he expects to be home later today.

Graham turns 90 on November 7, and to help the evangelist celebrate, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) is asking people to submit birthday wishes and testimonies to the ministry's website. The greetings and stories will be gathered and made into a book that will be presented to Dr. Graham. Ken Barun with the BGEA believes the greetings and well-wishers will encourage Graham. "So many people have been touched by the work that the Lord asked Mr. Graham to do while he's on this earth that we wanted to give an opportunity for those people to get in touch with Mr. Graham, send a birthday greeting, and share the story about how their [lives were] impacted by him," Barun explains. Barun says Graham is losing his sight and hearing, but he is alert and well enough to have spoken for about 15 minutes last month at a picnic for ministry staffers.

The American elections affect the whole world. So let me put my 5 cent worth here.

Its been a historic election specially for non-white people, as America has gone from

ANDREW WARNOCK makes a very good comment on his blog, encouraging Christians to pray for Mr Obama.
I found Mark Driscoll 's comment also very insightful on his RESURGENCE blog

Tell Me Why?

Please tell me why there are WORD VERIFICATION options on some blogs? They slow me down and frustrate me at times. I feel like one of Miss Jane Goodall 's pets.

Are they meant to check our IQ levels, or alphabet recognition skills ?I remember my Kindergarten teacher, a formidable Anglo-Indian lady called Miss Hogg (straight out of the movie Matilda, no just kidding). The Hoggs lived near our house and they had a real tiger skin displayed in their living room.We had a deer trophy in our living room, but the moths got it.My Dad was a hunter. I have his gun, it actually belongs to my grandfather who killed a lion with it. Its a story I have to tell.

Anyway to get back to my query. What is the purpose behind WV?They stress my out.Really. Like some aliens from MIB expecting me to know their language or crack their code. They are not even words to us, so why verify them.

The meeting with the AG church pastors did not turn out very good as some people were quite harsh with them. But they answered all their questions very graciously. I support the AG church and will do my best to accommodate them. Please pray for this. I know God will bless us through them.

Sigh...life is not smooth, lots of conflict bumps in the road. Please pray.

Today the fasting for the month of Ramzan (Ramadan)commenced. It was the first fast for our Muslim maid , Khairoon. She is an old widow lady, slow and not very bright, but very faithful loyal and honest, some what like Jeeves that 's her real asset.I offered to make her a pre-dawn breakfast but she declined as she had brought her food (she sleeps in Aunt S 's room). But for the breaking of her fast I made vadas (lentil patties) and tea.She will not keep the 40 day fast, but only the 5 day fast, symbolic I guess.

Riots

On Friday night there was trouble in the old Muslim dominated areas of the city, under the jurisdiction of six police stations.

Seems to be politically motivated.Somebody found a torn up copy of a religious book inside a mosque. The media is not allowed to reveal the name of the religious book, but my Mom heard a TV reporter say it the Sikh holy book. There was rioting in the old city and when the police tried to control the situation they were attacked by mobs and they even raided a police station.

A curfew was clamped in various parts of the city on Saturday and all educational institutions were closed. The situation is better and I suppose the curfew was relaxed today.I 'm not sure if the schools will re-open tomorrow. I 'm glad I had bought my groceries on Friday.

On Oct 31, 1984, our then Prime Minister, Indra Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards. Massive riots broke out all over North India.Sikhs were being slaughtered and their property looted and burnt.

The government controlled TV had newly arrived in our city and news was highly censored. When we heard about the rioting in our city, my mom and I decided to catch a live glimpse of it.With this purpose in mind we walked down our street with a man servant in tow. Just a short distance we saw Sikh shops being burnt and looted and people carrying off stolen stuff on cycle trolleys.Suddenly a police jeep appeared and gave us a stern warning to retreat home ,our servant being in greater danger of being arrested than us. This was the closest I got to a rioting scene.I was a university student then..People flocked to our house to watch TV, as it was very rare .TV watching used to be a social event.

Allahabad is a very peaceful town, but when politics turns bad anything can happen.

Our church court case hearing is on Sept 6th.The opponents sent a man to make inquires yesterday, but I asked him to speak to our lawyer They are in a tizzy as they cannot prove our land belongs to them.

We had a good church service and communion.

For Sunday lunch I made fish in tamarind sauce with rice.It was a river fish called rohu or carp.

Politics

The present Indian government, the UPA coalition is facing a crisis as a result of the nuclear deal PM Manmohan Singh (Congress party) made with Pres Bush. Most Indians think so too as it will facilitate much needed power generation. Not so the Left parties, who are the principal supporters of the UPA and the right wing Hindu BJP party. This could lead to a mid-term general election.

Talks are going on between the Congress and the Left parties. Lets see what the outcome will be.

The shocking Hyderabad terror attacks has numbed the country again.More than 40 dead. Our hearts bleed for those killed, wounded and maimed. Will this ever stop?

Why innocent people? Seven Information Technology students visiting from the neighbouring state of Maharashtra died, young men full of promise.A brother left his two sisters waiting in cab while he went inside the fast food joint where one of the bombs exploded, he died in there. Many tourists were enjoying a peaceful evening in Lumbini Park when the explosion snatched their lives away.

O Lord have mercy on your creation.

Recovering

Thank you dear friends for your kind words of sympathy and encouragement.God has been good to us .

Since the past two days my fever is controlled ,but I 've been coughing like an old horse on the way to the glue factory.I am allergic to changes in temperature, that causes headache and sinus problems. I called up a doctor friend and she recommended a cough syrup which has helped. But I feel awfully weak, head feels funny and my mouth is bitter.

We 've been having a steady steam of visitors and telephone calls.Aunt Sybil is getting more and more confused and frustrated day by day. we 've kept an ayah (maid) to look after her.

Since the past 4 years I 've been battling with sickness, old age, disability and countless other problems. All this has taken a very heavy toll on me.So I am going to offer voluntary service to teach English to the female students of the Seminary, (many of them need to develop their language skills). I will ask them to give me transport money as the college is far from my home. This will give me a chance to get out , use my skills and socialize.I am being very hopeful, lets see if they 'll accept me. the Principal is a family friend though.

Yesterday July 9th, was my elder BIL 's birthday. They live in Canada. We wanted to celebrate here, but I didn 't have the strength to cook, so Mama volunteered. She not a cook but reminded me that she made a cake once and sambar (Lentil with veggies). She made quite a decent soy dish. And for the evening meal I just made Maggie noodles.

Gotta go and give Sheeba a tick bath, I discovered three ticks hanging on to her yesterday that gave me the jitters. My dogs are absolutely tick free, ticks just tick me off.

Remember to pray for us

Thank you dear friends for your encouraging words and prayers.I know God is with us, He has never forsaken us. Our faith is tested from time to time. The Bible says welcome trials as friends, because they come to make you stronger and develop your patience . If I never had to face troubles I would have been the most impatient person in the whole world.I need a lot of work in that area.

My father 's elder brother, Uncle Kenneth (80 plus) is quite ill. He 's been doing quite badly since some time and we did not approve of the level of medical attention he was getting, but it was his wife 's choice He had a massive heart attack this morning, God saved him otherwise he would have gone. Pastor Shay and friends got him admitted in Intensive care in a Catholic hospital where we go for our treatment. He 's in the care of a reputed cardiologist. Uncle 's kidney 's are also damaged. He 's some better but the doctor said the next 48 hours are critical.

Its very stressful for all of us. They don 't have any children. We are their are their next of kin, so we feel responsible for them, and they are our neighbours too.

Thank you for your advice and prayers for Aunt Sybil. After that I am coping better. And by God 's grace she is doing better too.

Since the past 3 days the electricity supply is driving me crazy. You know what that means.

Anyway on our Indian political scene, the die is cast. Voting is over for our next President. People have several reasons for opposing Mrs Pratibha Patil.I too have some (altho I support her party) but my foremost objection is that she looks like a Saasu Maa (mother-in-law) of an old black and white movie( But I think she 's a velvet covered brick) I am putting myself at great risk here and people will think I 'm politically incorrect etc. etc. I am not against Saasu Maas In fact if I come across an organization in support of 'Cruelty Against Mother-In-Laws ' I 'll join it.But I want our Prez to look something 'else '. Sorry Pratibha Baa.

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

Osama Bin Laden 's 27 year old son Omar married British grandma Jane, 51 years old. She goes by a Muslim name too and has been married 6 times.Omar 's got another wife.

Omar is not being allowed in Britain as he cannot provide his Abbu 's (Daddy 's) address. Jane wants to meet her illustrious sasurji(father-in-law) and ask him if he is really involved in terrorist activities. She doesn 't think so.

As wedding gift to the British nation Al Qaeda 's second in command Zawahiri has threatened to increase terrorist activities on the island. He is very angry at the knighthood bestowed on Salman Rushdie.

Well, you can never tell with love and war.

SUNDAY BLESSINGS

Today we had good music in church as a gentleman attending played my keyboard. I am a string instruments person, I 'm not good with keyboards.

Chole Bhature
For lunch I made chole/bature. Its fried bread with chickpea curry. And a yogurt salad with dried lotus seeds (makhanay). For dinner I will make scrambled eggs with tomatoes and onions.

Lotus seeds
